Case Study: Large Complex Renovation Project Scan to BIM

At Daly Productions, we thrive on tackling complex architectural challenges, and our latest project, capturing a large commercial building in Dublin, was no exception.

Using Matterport Scan to BIM technology, we were tasked with documenting an intricate multi-level property featuring a number of unique challenges, including a spiral staircase, a basement with separate street access, multiple stairwells, 10 floors, and an external bridge connecting sections of the building.

Thanks to Matterport’s advanced 3D scanning technology and our expertise in managing complex environments, we successfully captured every detail of the property with precision. The result was a fully immersive Matterport 3D Digital, along with an accurate Revit model, suitable for immediate use in Revit and other architectural design software.

Matterport 3D Digital Twin for Stakeholder Collaboration

Save Time and Resources

Once the space was captured, we created an immersive 3D Digital Twin that could be shared with all project stakeholders, including architects, designers, contractors, and clients.

This immersive digital twin provides a comprehensive understanding of the building without the need for a physical site visit. Architects and design teams can virtually walk through the property, review key features, assess existing conditions, and identify potential challenges before making design decisions.

For a building of this scale and complexity, particularly one that remains operational during the renovation process, the Digital Twin significantly reduces the need for frequent site visits, saving both time and resources.

Scan to BIM:  From 3D Digital Twin to Revit and 2D Drawings

The next stage involved converting the Matterport point cloud data into a fully detailed Revit Model.

Once created, the model is available in Revit and other leading architectural design platforms. This allows architects and engineers to work within their preferred software environment while benefiting from highly accurate existing-condition data.

The model serves as a reliable foundation for developing renovation designs, structural plans, construction documentation, and material specifications, helping teams work more efficiently and with greater confidence.

Streamlining Renovation Projects

Having both a 3D Digital Twin and a detailed 3D Architectural Model at the outset of a renovation project is a game-changer.

The immersive Digital Twin enables seamless remote collaboration and improved stakeholder communication, while the Architectural Model provides the accuracy and efficiency needed for design and planning. Together, they give architects, engineers, contractors, and clients the tools they need to deliver successful renovation projects.

This was one of the most complex capture projects undertaken by Daly Productions to date, and it demonstrates the significant value that accurate digital documentation can bring to large-scale renovation and redevelopment projects.
