Case Study: Using Matterport for Dublin Building Renovation Project

At Daly Productions, we thrive on tackling complex architectural challenges, and our most recent project — capturing a commercial building in Dublin — was no exception. Using Matterport technology, we were tasked with capturing an intricate, multi-level property that included numerous challenging features, such as a spiral staircase, a basement accessed only from the street, two sets of stairs, 10 floors, and an external bridge connecting different sections of the building.

Matterport’s 3D scanning technology and our expertise in managing such projects made it possible to capture every detail with precision. The end result was a 3D Virtual Tour of the property, plus a precise 3D Architect Model for use in Revit and other architectural software.software.

Once we captured the space with Matterport, we created a 3D Virtual Tour of the building, which is shared with all stakeholders — including architects, designers, contractors, and clients. This immersive tour is an incredible tool for gaining a comprehensive understanding of the space, especially when you can’t physically be on-site. It allows architects and design teams to virtually walk through the building, reviewing key features and assessing potential challenges before making design decisions.

The Virtual Tour eliminates the need for frequent on-site visits, which is particularly valuable for a building as complex as this and which is still in use.

The next step was converting the Point Cloud data from Matterport into a fully detailed 3D Architect Model. Once we’ve created the 3D Architect Model, it can be directly imported into Revit or other architectural design software.

This allows architects to work seamlessly within their preferred platforms, taking advantage of the model to develop detailed designs, structural plans, and materials specifications.

Conclusion: Streamlining Renovation Projects

Having both a 3D Virtual Tour and a detailed 3D Architect Model at the beginning of any renovation project, is a game-changer. From the remote collaboration of the Virtual Tour, to the accuracy, speed and efficiency of the 3D Architect Model, the architect and other collaborators have all the tools they need to execute a renovation project. This is one of Daly Productions most complex tasks, but we've brough significant value to this renovation project.
